WHY PORTUGAL SHOULD BE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST IN 2018
I’m one very lucky girl, as I had the chance to spend a few months in Portugal as an exchange student. After those 6 months, I left in love. I fell really, really hard. No words can ever describe everything that Portugal has to offer. It is an essence, a vibe, an aura. It genuinely is an undiscovered European gem. It is home to Colourful streets, golden beaches and sunsets. It has a lively but at the same time chilled atmosphere with their “unhurried” lifestyle with friendly locals, scenic views and walks, the amazing food, pastries, outdoor seating, architectural wonders and the list could go on. It seriously isn’t a place one should simply skip or cross off the traveling list this year, and here are some reasons why.
#1 The mouth-watering pastries.
You have to try Pastel de Nata, the traditional scrumptious egg-cream tart. Trust me, Portuguese know how to do pastries pretty well and because of this fact, you can be quite sure you’ll never go wrong with anything you pick in one of the Pastelarias that can be found on every corner.
#2 Unforgettable beaches and sunsets.
No doubt a highlight in every travel brochure, Portugal has over 100 beaches, and no, not all of them are located in Algarve. There is huge diversity when it comes to the beaches. The waves are usually big and the water quite cold but bear in mind, you are bathing in the Atlantic Ocean. You will be rewarded with a romantic pink and orange sunset at the end of the day. Plus, the majority of the beaches are located on the west, and as this aligns with the orientation in which the sun sets, this creates a picturesque scene which I guarantee will be the most lingering memories.
#3 Coffee is damn good.
For all the coffee lovers out there, this will be like heaven for you. For only 0,70€ you will find the best quality coffee and the aesthetics of these coffee shops are just breath-taking.
#4 The award-winning wine.
Wine production is one of Portugal’s most ancient traditions, and Portuguese wine is becoming increasingly recognised worldwide for its exquisite flavour and rich quality. Chances are there is a great quality wine at a very reasonable price waiting for you.
#5 Centuries-old cities and castles.
Sintra will make you feel like you’re living in a fairy-tale. Quaint narrow alleyways, picturesque façades and glamorous palaces and gardens. This place is not to be missed and may bring you closer than ever to achieving your dream of being a princess.
#6 Take a train from the north to the south with beautiful coastline scenery.
Braga to Lisbon train line is definitely going to make your long journey much more pleasant if you grab a seat by the window.
#7 Super fresh fish, vegetables and fruit on the local markets.
You may find yourself a few decades behind, but locals still prefer to shop on the markets in Portugal. They enjoy chatting with you while you’re choosing the best basket of oranges. Portugal is also the biggest fishing zone in Europe and the prices are ridiculously cheap. Try traditional Bacalhau, Dourada, Sardinhas or Robalo.
#8 One of the greatest climates in Europe.
There is hardly a bad time throughout the year to visit Portugal. Winters are mild, and temperatures rarely drop under 10 degrees. It has a hot summer with the breeze from Atlantic Ocean and the highest number of sunshine in Europe. And with the endless outdoor activities, it’s hard to beat this.
#9 The nightlife lasts until morning.
The party generally starts early and, well, ends early too (early the next day, that is.)
#10 Friendly and amazing locals.
Portuguese people love to socialise, make new friends and in general are easy-going people. And their hospitality is just the best. They always make sure you are eating well and make you feel at home. It is an unwritten rule that all Portuguese really care about is sun, a drink and a good chat with friends.
#11 Portuguese music.
Fado music will probably be one of the most melancholic music you will hear, but at the same time you will absolutely adore it as it somehow makes an idyllic soundtrack for every trip to Portugal. Music festivals are also becoming a huge part in the summer and autumn event calendar with all kinds of music.
#12 Amazing design.
Streets and buildings are made of perfectly decorated tiles that creates an impressive design and the most picturesque place. It’s all very eye catching. You can pretty much visit any town or village and be sure be to nail it with your Instagram feed.
#13 It’s so cheap.
Without a hesitation, Portugal is definitely one of the destinations you can visit on a low budget. Starting from food, accommodation or the entry fees for historical and many other attractions, there is hard to find a better deal for money in Europe. And unlike Barcelona or other mainstream destinations, you can experience authenticity pretty much everywhere you go in Portugal.
