THE FASHION CYCLE: CHILDHOOD VS ADULTHOOD
As a kid there were multiple items that I wore relentlessly, dungarees, T-bar shoes, gingham dresses, puffer jackets, you name a mid-to-late nineties trend and I was most probably wearing it.
Fast forward ten years and I found myself craving the same things six year old me wore without a second thought, all in the name of fashion and current trends. No matter how many times a trend is recycled, it still baffles me and it leave me hesitant to get rid of any clothing I own - because, let’s face it- I’m going to be wearing it again in a few years anyway.
A few years back, I recall the influx of jelly sandals hitting the high street stores, I had terrible flashbacks - suddenly I was six years old again, wearing white frilled pelerine school socks, my feet caged into clear, silver glittered basketweave jelly sandals - and I remember thinking ‘These are a trend again? I’m actually old enough to have seen these come full circle?’. Lo and behold, a few weeks later I was wearing a heeled pair (that I’d purchased in two colours, may I add) with baby blue ribbon frilled ankle socks and all felt right with the world. (NB: If these come back again in a few years please for the love of god take my advice and wear socks with them. No one wants plastic induced blisters)
This was right around the time frilled ankle socks came back into fashion in general, naturally I owned a ridiculous amount of pairs (in far too many colours that sit far at the back of my drawer in hopes they’ll one day be worn. They probably won’t) and I was hopelessly obsessed with a black pair with a black and white gingham frill, talk about ‘old-skool’. It’s quite fascinating to find the influences of fashion, and trends, especially when you find yourself as an adult wearing something that was a requirement as a child.
So now it’s March 2018 and I’m shamelessly unashamed to wear a dungaree dress, that’s a fact. At
twenty-four years old I still take pleasure in some old style comforts, however
now I’ll pair it with a ruffled sleeved blouse and platform boots, whereas twenty years ago I’d most probably favour a pair of stripped tights and a knit sweater. Times don’t change all too much, do they?
